| When I was 20, I experienced a lesson that changed my life forever -- I was friends. While losing your hair from chemotherapy was not fun, having a Mohawk and going by the name "Chemosabay" was (see my photo album for a picture). So was having wheelchair races in the hallway with your friends; however, I was told I would never be able to have children of my own. I believe that everyone has a purpose and mine is to make a difference in the lives of other people. As a cancer survivor, I have feel the need to give back to others. In 1997, in association with the American Cancer Society, I started HERO, a support group for teens and young adults with cancer. I later worked for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, where as the program director I oversaw the granting of more than 1,000 wishes; And with the United Way, I interacted with 114 community-based programs for families. Most recently, I founded the Northcoast Fatherhood Initiative, a community effort to empower fathers to make a difference in the lives of their children. And I'm just getting started... In my talk, "Be A Dad, Not A Referee," I share ideas and stories that take fathers from the position of being the disciplinarian to the role of "dad," where he can really make a difference. I share the "3 Principals Refereeing," how to increase quality time with their children, and the meaning behind responsible fatherhood. Plus, everyone in the audience will have fun and leave with a smile and renewed sense of confidence about making a difference in the lives of their children.
